Every Hour Helps a Child
You do not need special skills, a lot of time, or a child in a particular grade. You need an hour and a willingness to help.
Why It Matters
Children do better when the adults around them are involved. Decades of research behind National PTA’s family engagement work say the same thing: students whose families take part earn better grades, attend more regularly, and are more likely to finish school, whatever the family’s income or background.
- Your child sees you there. Turning up at school says the place matters, more clearly than saying so at home.
- You get to know the school. Teachers, staff, the other families, and how the day actually runs.
- Every student benefits. Volunteers are what make the events, programmes and classroom support possible, not just for one class.
- It is genuinely flexible. An hour at one event counts. So does an evening of cutting out laminating at home.
Get Approved First
Leander ISD approves every volunteer before they work with students, and it runs a background check as part of that. It applies to everyone: room parents, classroom helpers, field trip chaperones, and anyone helping at an event.
Approval lasts one school year. Even if you volunteered last year, you need to apply again for 2026-2027. Approval can take up to two weeks, so it is worth doing before the event you have in mind.
- Complete the district’s volunteer application. It opens in Raptor, the system Leander ISD uses for volunteer records.
- Wait for the district to confirm your approval. Allow up to two weeks.
- Sign up for whatever you would like to help with, below.

Other Ways to Help
Being a Room Parent is one of the most useful roles at Cox Elementary School, and the PTA always needs people to chair or help with an event. See the chair positions that are open, or get in touch and we will find something that fits.
You can also volunteer beyond Cox PTA through the LISD Council of PTAs, which runs district-wide programmes such as the Clothes Closet.
